Cannington mine life extension - environmental impact statement
Alluvium was commissioned to provide the surface water impact assessment for an Environmental Impact Statement regarding the life extension of the BHP Billiton Cannington Mine.
The assessment of surface water management requirements focused on the Hamilton River and Trepell Creek both of which are in the vicinity of the proposed open cut pit. Various open cut pit options would require various combinations of waterway diversions on one or both of the Hamilton River and Trepell Creek as well as flood protection for the pit.
To undertake this assessment, baseline geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulics, flood modeling and riparian vegetation assessment were undertaken. All diversion options have been risk assessed for short and long term considerations for the mining operations and environmental sustainability.
