Large wood assessment in East Gippsland
The lower Mitchell, Tambo and Nicholson Rivers have been subject to large degrees of desnagging and clearing of riparian vegetation. In response to these changes the
East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority (EGCMA) has installed nearly one hundred engineered log structures to provide fish habitat.
Alluvium undertook a unique sub-surface evaluation of the structures through the use of professinal divers and documented the condition of the structures and surrounding aquatic life using them. This work allowed us to develop a better understanding of factors impacting their longevity and their utilisation by instream biota, and ultimately assist in maximising the benefits of future installations.
