Wai is Water

Growing up in a provincial coastal town on the North Island of New Zealand, schooling includes learning elements of the Maori culture. An understanding of the indigenous culture leads to appreciation their traditions and values. Wai, the Maori word for water, has always been pivotal and very sacred to the Maori people. Permission to use a river is obtained through prayer. Each river has its own Mana (spiritual power). Management of water resources in New Zealand must recognize the Maori Interests. A section of the Resource Management Act is dedicated to taking into account the Maori Values of resources.
